Analysis Of Gilman s The Yellow Wallpaper - 867 Words
Gilmanââ¬â¢s The Yellow Wallpaper follows a womanââ¬â¢s repressed life and her spiral into insanity. The story follows an unnamed narrator who battles depression but strives to write and be creative. Though her illness can be cured, she struggles against her husband that feels the stimulus is not conducive with the treatment for her illness. Though it can be argued within this modern age that the inability to express ones creativity can propagate insanity, the Victorian gender roles were clear that the man knew best, leaving her no room for opinion. The breakdown of the woman can be seen within certain aspects of the story, beginning with the husband, John who also takes on the role of her doctor. Although he does show love for his wife, the role John has taken as provider and caretaker has more of a medical base than marital as shown by the neglect to see the error of his course of treatment that a loving husband may have noticed. The continuance of his patronizing also proves to hurt her as it stimulates her illness by making her feel like a child. By referring to her as ââ¬Å"blessed little gooseâ⬠(Gilman 2), and using such terms as ââ¬Å"Bless her little heart,â⬠(Gilman 5) he belittles her, giving no room for her own words to have any real meaning to him. Alcohol and Tobacco in Sports - 914 Words
With sports becoming more and more commercialized, sponsorships have taken over professional sports. In this paper, Alcohol and Tobacco sponsorships will be the issue of this paper. Sports sponsorship has become an important marketing tool for advertiserââ¬â¢s because of the flexibility, broad reach, and high level of brand or corporate exposure that it affords, (Krapp, 49). Yet some sponsors have created an uproar with in the society, these are namely alcohol and tobacco products. These two make up about half of the sponsorship in professional sports today. Sports sponsorship has been around since the creation of professional sport in the late nineteenth century. This is why you will see more alcohol advertisements than sports drink advertisements. The alcohol and tobacco companies want to be incorporated with sports since they are considered good for a person, and they are not great for a person. It makes them good by association with the sports that they sponsor. Cigarette ads were banned from television in the United States in 1971 and in many other countries including Canada and Australia. A key benefit of sports sponsorship is that it provides a legal loophole for circumventing the ad ban, (Krapp, 51). Tobacco products have also been sponsors of sporting eventââ¬â¢s for more than a century. With brands of chewing tobacco sponsoring the majority of baseball teams and making baseball cards with their brand name on the card since professional baseball sprung up in America. Tobacco companies have recently taken a lot of fire on their advertising to the youth of America. A study in Australia found that the brands that were most popular with children, aged 12 to 14, are the same brands that sponsor the stateââ¬â¢s major league football competition,(Krapp, 52). My opinion on this topic is that the money that both alcohol and tobacco advertising pulls in for each of the professional sports is good for those sports. The Rhetorical Message Of The Photograph Sonata For Freedom
The Rhetorical Message of the Photograph: ââ¬Å"Sonata for Freedomâ⬠This photo, named ââ¬Å"Sonata for Freedomâ⬠for the purposes of this essay, was taken by an unknown photographer in Chechnya in 1994 (teamjedan.wordpress.com). Chechnya is a republic in southwestern Russia. In 1991, the Republic of Chechnya began fighting for independence from Russia, so in 1994, Russia sent approximately 40,000 troops to silence them (cnn.com). Furthermore, there is also a lot of triangulation between the soldier and piano. A sort of diamond shape is created with the soldier, since there is triangulation between both his head and the middle of the piano and the middle of the piano and his feet. The use of triangulation here helps draw the viewerââ¬â¢s eyes so that
